Pakistan Maritime Security Agency has been assigned additional tasks of
maintaining Marine Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) on
behalf of Ministry of Communication to readily respond to emergencies
and coordinate SAR operations. PMSA undertakes SAR operations itself or
requests other authorities or even MRCCs of other countries for prompt
and effective SAR Operations. PMSA has so far
rescued a large number of vessels in distress at high seas.
In August 1999, PMSA in coordination with assistance of other agencies, carried out the biggest ever rescue operation in the history of Pakistan by rescuing 43 crew of a grounded
North Korean vessel approximately 90 NM east of Karachi.
